Where to Stay in Rome: A Neighborhood Guide
Finding your perfect corner of the Eternal City
Choosing where to stay in Rome can feel almost as important as choosing the hotel itself.
Rome is wonderfully walkable, but each neighborhood offers a completely different experience. You can wake up steps from the Colosseum, spend your evenings wandering the cobblestone streets of Trastevere, stay among the polished boutiques near the Spanish Steps, or retreat to a quieter residential neighborhood after a busy day of sightseeing.
There isn't one best neighborhood in Rome.
There is, however, a best neighborhood for the way you want to experience Rome.
Here are the areas I consider most often when helping travelers decide where to stay.
Monti
Best for: First-Time Visitors + Boutique Hotel Lovers
If it's your first trip to Rome and you want to feel like you're in Rome from the moment you step outside, Monti is one of my favorite places to start.
Set between the Colosseum and Termini, Monti manages to be incredibly convenient while still feeling like a neighborhood. Cobblestone streets are lined with tiny wine bars, independent boutiques, cafés and family-run trattorias.
You're close enough to walk to many of Rome's biggest sights, but in the evenings, you can retreat into a neighborhood that feels considerably more intimate.

YOU'LL BE NEAR:
Colosseum · Roman Forum · Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
I'D CHOOSE MONTI IF:
You want excellent walkability without sacrificing neighborhood character.
HOTELS I LIKE HERE:
The Fifteen Keys · Condominio Monti · Sentho Roma · The Inn at the Roman Forum
Centro Storico
Best for: First Trips + Maximum Walkability
If your vision of Rome involves stepping outside your hotel and wandering past fountains, piazzas and centuries-old buildings on your way to dinner, the historic center is hard to beat.
Staying around the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori puts some of Rome's most recognizable sights almost literally outside your door.
The trade-off? You'll be sharing those beautiful streets with plenty of other visitors, and hotels in prime locations can command a premium.
But for a short first trip when location matters above almost everything else, that can be a trade worth making.
THE FEEL: Iconic · Romantic · Bustling · Central
YOU'LL BE NEAR:
Pantheon · Piazza Navona · Campo de' Fiori · Trevi Fountain
I'D CHOOSE CENTRO STORICO IF:
You have limited time in Rome and want to walk almost everywhere.
Spanish Steps + Campo Marzio
Best for: Luxury + Shopping
For an elegant, polished version of Rome, look toward the streets surrounding Piazza di Spagna.
Campo Marzio encompasses some of the city's most prestigious addresses, from Piazza del Popolo to the Spanish Steps, along with Via del Corso and Rome's luxury shopping streets.
This is where I'd look for a client who wants beautiful hotels, excellent shopping, sophisticated restaurants and an incredibly central location—and is comfortable paying more for it.

YOU'LL BE NEAR:
Spanish Steps · Piazza del Popolo · Trevi Fountain · Villa Borghese
I'D CHOOSE THIS AREA IF:
Hotel experience, shopping and an elevated atmosphere are high priorities.
Trastevere
Best for: Food + Atmosphere
Trastevere is the Rome many travelers imagine before they arrive: ivy spilling down ochre buildings, tiny cobblestone lanes, café tables tucked onto sidewalks and trattorias coming alive as the sun goes down.
It's slightly removed from Rome's biggest concentration of landmarks, but that's part of its appeal.
During the day, wander across the river to explore historic Rome. At night, return to one of the city's best neighborhoods for eating, drinking and simply wandering.
Just choose your exact hotel location carefully—some streets can become lively at night.

Santa Maria in Trastevere · Tiber River · Janiculum Hill
I'D CHOOSE TRASTEVERE IF:
Your evenings are as important to you as your sightseeing.
HOTEL I LIKE HERE:
Hotel Donna Camilla Savelli
Prati
Best for: Families + A Quieter Stay
Across the Tiber and close to Vatican City, Prati offers a very different experience from the historic center.
Streets are wider. The atmosphere is more residential. There are excellent restaurants and shops, but considerably fewer tour groups wandering past your hotel.
For families in particular, that little bit of breathing room can be wonderful after a full day exploring Rome.
You're sacrificing some doorstep access to ancient Rome, but gaining a quieter place to return to each evening.
THE FEEL: Residential · Polished · Quiet · Relaxed
YOU'LL BE NEAR:
Vatican Museums · St. Peter's Basilica · Castel Sant'Angelo
I'D CHOOSE PRATI IF:
You want a quieter, more local base or plan to spend significant time around Vatican City.
HOTEL I LIKE HERE:
The First Musica
Via Veneto + Villa Borghese
Best for: A Quieter, Upscale City Stay
For travelers who like being central but don't necessarily want to open their hotel doors directly into Rome's busiest tourist streets, the area around Via Veneto and Villa Borghese deserves a look.
You'll have one of Rome's most beautiful green spaces nearby while remaining within walking distance of the Spanish Steps and other central sights.
It's polished and sophisticated without quite the same intensity as staying beside the Pantheon or Trevi Fountain.
THE FEEL: Sophisticated · Quiet · Green · Upscale
YOU'LL BE NEAR:
Villa Borghese · Via Veneto · Spanish Steps
I'D CHOOSE THIS AREA IF:
You appreciate a little breathing room but don't want to feel disconnected from central Rome.
