For most first-time visitors, I love Monti. It’s charming, central and within walking distance of the Colosseum and Roman Forum, with plenty of little restaurants, wine bars and cafés nearby. If being able to walk to Rome’s biggest sights is a priority, the historic center around the Spanish Steps, Pantheon and Piazza Navona is another great option.

The “best” neighborhood really depends on how you want your trip to feel—which is why I always consider location just as carefully as the hotel itself.

Rome hotels can be surprisingly expensive, especially during peak travel months. In high season, even relatively simple, well-located properties can command premium rates.

Rather than choosing based on price or star rating alone, I recommend looking closely at location, room size, reviews and overall value. A hotel that looks like an amazing deal isn't always a great deal if you're sacrificing location, comfort or the experience you actually want.

Absolutely. Rome is incredibly family-friendly, and kids are very much part of everyday Italian life. Between gladiator experiences, pizza and pasta-making classes, gelato stops, parks and interactive ways to experience ancient Rome, there are plenty of ways to make the city exciting for children.

The biggest difference when I plan Rome for families is pace. I wouldn't plan the same itinerary for a family with young children that I would for a couple. A little breathing room can completely change how the trip feels.

For families, I prioritize walkability, room configuration and easy access to restaurants. Staying centrally can make it much easier to return to your hotel for a break rather than spending your day going back and forth across the city.

The area around the Spanish Steps is wonderfully central, while Prati is a great choice for families who prefer something quieter near the Vatican. Monti can also work beautifully for families who want character and easy access to ancient Rome.

Rome is generally a safe destination for travelers, particularly throughout the main tourist areas. As in any major European city, you'll want to be mindful of your belongings in crowded areas and on public transportation, where pickpocketing can occur.

Normal city awareness goes a long way—keep valuables secure and pay a little extra attention in busy places like train stations and major attractions.

For a first visit, I recommend at least three full days, but four is even better. That gives you enough time for ancient Rome, the Vatican, the historic center and some of the neighborhoods that make Rome feel like Rome—without turning your vacation into a race from one attraction to another.

If Rome is part of a larger Italy itinerary, I usually prefer giving it enough time to actually enjoy the city rather than squeezing everything into two exhausting days.

For the major sights, yes. The Colosseum, Vatican Museums and Galleria Borghese are all experiences I would plan ahead rather than leaving until you arrive.

This is also where a thoughtfully planned itinerary matters. It's not just about securing tickets—it's about booking them at times that make sense geographically so you aren't unnecessarily crossing Rome all day.

Very! Walking is actually one of the best ways to experience Rome. You'll constantly stumble across beautiful piazzas, churches, fountains and little streets you never would have seen otherwise.

That said, Rome is larger than it looks on a map and the cobblestones are very real. Choosing the right hotel location and grouping your sightseeing by neighborhood makes a huge difference.
